There are different kinds of chemical solutions used to slough off dead skin layers thus making the skin smoother and more radiant as ever.
1. Alpha hydroxy acid peels - the mildest form of peels and is made from naturally occurring acids found in fruits and other foods. Usually known as a "lunch" peel because this kind of treatment has no downtime. You can resume activities without people noticing it.
There are four main fruit acids:
a. Citrus Acid Peel: Usually from citrus fruits such as lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit and etc.
b. Glycolic Acid: Formulated from sugar cane and is known to be a bit stronger in exfoliating superficial dead skin cells compared to citrus acid. Alot of people are giving good feedbacks about this treatment peel. Very helpful in diminishing fine lines and blemishes.
c. Lactic Acid: Derived from goat's or sour milk. Cleopatra was known for taking milk baths and this helped her skin become radiant and smooth!
d. Malic Acid: Derived from apple extracts and is known to specifically unclog pores, decrease sebum and treat acne breakouts.
I use Glycolic Acid (20%) usually once a week and Malic Acid (M2 Lotion) three times a week depending on my skin's needs. My skin tends to dry up easily so i don't really use them often.
A glycolic session may cost up to 500-3000 pesos depending where you have it. At our clinic we provide patients the option to have their weekly glycolic treatment for 1000 pesos/session or purchase a take home mini peel with 50 pads for only 4000 pesos.
( M2 lotion or Malic Acid can also be for melasma treatment After 6 months of usage)
M2 lotion is php 3500, good for 3-6 months depending on usage. A very good product =)
AHA peels are used to:
- reduce fine wrinkles
- even out skin tone and reduce pigmentation
- aid in the control of acne
- smoothen skin
- improve the texture of sun-damaged skin
AHA peels may:
- cause a mild stinging sensation
- cause skin redness
but will fade fast - cause dryness
- take multiple treatments for desired result
2. Beta Hydroxy Acid Peels
AHA's are known to only treat the superficial layer of the skin. If you want to go deep down into the pores, BETA Hydroxy Acid is the best peel for you. This peel is known to treat acne because of its greater ability to control and remove oil and bacteria.
Salycylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid and is found in most acne fighting products. It is one of the most effective ingredients to combat the cause of facial oil, acne and blemishes.
3. TCA
Trichloroacetic acid peels
- peels are considered medium-deep peeling agents ranging from 20%-50% in concentrations. They reach slightly deeper into the skin than alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peels and Beta hydroxy peels--and thus often produce stronger results.TCA:
- suitable for dark skin tones
- removes superficial blemishes
- reduces fine wrinkles
- reduces acne scars
- smooths out the skin
- corrects skin pigmentation
- will give immediate and dramatic results compared to other peels
- skin will be tighter and smoother
- skin will be radiant
DISADVANTAGES:
- may cause a strong stingy sensation (often referred to as "peppermint" sensation)
- may peel up to one week
- Requires pre-treatment with tretinoin or AHA creams
- requires the use of Sunblock and prevention of sun exposure (1 week)
